Excessive hardrive activity in Gutsy Beta???

Some people have been emailing and instant messaging me about excessive hard drive activity on their Dell Inspiron 1501 with Gutsy, even after disabling "Tracker" and having nothing running in the background. The problem is described as a weird hard drive noise every few seconds while the HD light goes on. They are reporting that this does not happen with their Windows XP and Vista Partitions.

I am not getting any weird noises or excess hard drive activity from my 1501. I'm guessing that it can either be from the problem being isolated to a small subsection of users, or the fact that I upgraded my hard drive a while ago, so I cannot really be of much help.

If anyone is getting weird noises or excessive hard drive activity with Gutsy on their 1501, leave a comment.

Probably, it's a new search app. May be indexing process.

I have not had any issue and I still have my original hard drive.

did have this problem with vista.

the only problem that i have had is every now and then the update manager will crash and restart but other then that nothing all my hardware runs without a problem.

I have a similar problem... ubuntu doesn't shut down my hd properly, it kinda lets the needles fall on it, unlike windows, which lets the hd spin down gradually... not making any sound...

i experience a little more noise from HDD than when using vista, in which i hear absolutely no sound.

also, the fan seems to run for a long, long time without halt.

That happened to me too when I installed libtracker on Ubuntu Feisty.

No weird noise, but the computer would become unusable and the hard drive activity light would just stay solid green.

It might be the normal indexing process, or it might be a bug.

Honestly, even if it IS the normal indexing process it should still be considered a bug. I'd much rather have the initial indexing take twice as long then have it thrash my hard drive and make it unusable.

I don't even know what Gutsy is but my hard drive thrashes so much it's driving me nuts so I've been searching on the subject which is how I came here. I have the Inspiron 1501 with dual core AMD Turion64 and it's fast as long as it doesn't need to access the hard drive, where I went for the lowest end 60GB one which was my first mistake. It just slows everything down so much that the fast chips are wasted, so I know I have to upgrade the hard drive. It upsets me with Dell though as why even give a hard drive that is this freaking slow as an option? Though of course I could have just done my research but still I just assumed there was a bare minimum in performance from a reputable company.

Just got my 1501. Booted vista and noticed the hard drive clicking. So it's not isolated to Gutsy. I have th e Gutsy Beta CD in the drive now. Ready to pull the trigger.
