Does Anyone Use the Microphone?

Sergio de la Cruz asked:
"My microphone does not work. I don't know why. Some people here tells that it works OK. Can you guide me to the proper audio configuration for it to work?"

Can anyone out there tell me if their microphone works and if they had to do anything special to get it working? I left my 1501 in the office and I'm lazy. Thanks!

See Capriccio's second post on this page on how to fix the mic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=206606&highlight=STAC+92XX&page=3

Got it working with Skype great. Didn't test with Gizmo Project because it's acting screwy. Still can't get it to work right with the sound recorder - in fact, the fix may not have worked at all since I didn't test Skype before I implemented the fix and I've seen somewhere that Skype may still be receiving the mic signal.

Hmm - my mike works just fine :)

Hi.
My works fine, but I had to add to /etc/rc.local:

amixer set 'Capture' cap

I don't know if your mic is working yet but here is my comment: i use the microphone off my webcam, although i don't use the video (it doesn't work on Linux's Skype), and it works perfectly well.Thing is, it only works in the very first account that was created in Ubuntu! Maybe if you let me know if it's working yet, and what you tried. Hope you get it to work! (also, if you're trying to use the mic for talking over the net, try using Ekiga, because the version of Skype available for Linux is only a Beta (it's not complete).)

Whutt ? You mean there IS a mic with the inspiron 1501 ? The basic one ? (i.e. no multimedia buttons whatsoever) ??

If there is, is it quite well hidden or do i really need new glasses ?

i did this:
1. typed 'alsamixer' in terminal
2. used left/right arrow keys to highlight 'capture mux'
3. hit up arrow a few times
4. hit esc
gutsy, alsamixer v1.0.14, hda ati sb, sigmatel stac9200

After doing both the above Capriccio fix and the amixer fix, I can finally record (in sound recorder even).
But I'm getting near-constant clicking on the line, has anyone else experienced that?
I had a similar problem with some cheap headphones. Oddly enough these headphones (it's a headset) don't do that but do seem to do clicking on the mic.

Sorry about that, a bit more fiddling and I found that if I set the sound capture (in System->Preferences->Sound) to OSS, the clicking goes away.

I solved microphone problems on my Dell Inspiron 1501 by adding one line to both /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and /etc/modprobe.d/options - the line to be added is the same:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m26
The model ID (dell-m26) can be determined by running this command as root:
zcat /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz | grep 'Inspiron 1501'
